Woke up to the mirror reflection at dawn. This is what people mean by ‘the edge of the world’. We were alone — no one else at the lake. Achuo brought hot tea to our tent.

Jihu Lake Refuge
Near the sacred alpine lake Jihu, this shelter is the end point for most treks in the region.
About this shelter
Jihu Lake is one of the sacred lakes of the region — circled by pilgrims and herders, considered a place where the boundary between worlds is thin. The refuge sits about 30 minutes' walk from the lake's edge.
The shelter is the only accommodation at this elevation in the area, and serves as the endpoint for both the Galuo-Jihu trek and longer Cherta Pass crossings. It can also be reached on a long day-walk from Manigango for travelers who don't want a multi-day commitment.
The refuge is more developed than the high-altitude shelters — private rooms, a proper kitchen, and a small common area with a wood stove. Still no WiFi, still no road, still no light pollution.

What travelers say
Most magical campsite I have slept at. Sacred lake, prayer flags, no crowds. Achuo and the family built a fire and we watched stars for hours.
Light pack, full heart. They fed us so much I could barely walk to the outhouse (yes there is one!).
