Cherta Pass at 5,100m is a beast. We had to turn back twice due to weather, but Achuo rerouted us and we still crossed. His patience is otherworldly.

Cherta Pass Traverse
The classic route — across Cherta at 5,100m, through the heart of the high plateau. For experienced trekkers only.
Overview
The Cherta Pass traverse is the route that put Manigango on the map for serious trekkers. Seven days, 180 kilometers, and one pass at 5,100 meters that demands attention, acclimatization, and respect.
This is not a route for first-time high-altitude trekkers. The combination of distance, sustained altitude, and weather exposure means you need real fitness and ideally previous experience above 4,500m.
In return, you get something close to the original experience of this region — the same line yak caravans have followed for centuries, the same shelters, the same vast and largely empty landscapes. We cap this route at 6 people per departure.
Day by Day
Manigango → Galuo → Acclimatization
Drive to Galuo, then walk 2-3 hours to the first shelter. Day 2 is a rest day — short walks, hydrate, sleep. Critical for the days ahead.
High Pasture Ascent
Gradual climb to high camp at 4,500m. Time to acclimatize, watch weather, and prepare for the crossing.
Cherta Pass Crossing
Summit day. Start at 4am, reach the pass by 9am, descend to the other side by early afternoon. ~25 km, 10-12 hours. The day that defines this route.
Descent and Return
Descend through valleys back to Manigango proper. Easier walking, time to process what you just did. Pickup on Day 7 by mid-afternoon.
Prerequisites
- · Previous trekking experience above 4,500m (required)
- · Medical clearance for high-altitude activity
- · Comprehensive travel insurance covering helicopter evacuation
- · Minimum 2 weeks acclimatization in the region recommended

What travelers say
I have trekked the Himalayas, Andes, and Alps. Cherta Pass with Achuo is in my top 3 ever. The mountain shelter at 4,800m was warm, the food was real, the guide was honest.
Stunning trek. Lost a star because day 4 was very cold — bring more layers than you think. Achuo had extras though, which saved me.
Crossing the pass at sunrise was the highlight of my year. Achuo timed it perfectly. Cloud inversion below us, peaks above — magic.
