I came for the trek but stayed for the monastery. The monks let us join morning prayers. Achuo translated their welcome. Life-changing.

Zongskya Monastery Loop
A gentle valley walk to the 800-year-old Zongskya monastery. Overnight with a monk's family. Cultural immersion at its finest.
Overview
Not every meaningful journey to the high plateau requires a 5,000m pass. Zongskya is for travelers who want the cultural depth of Manigango without the athletic demands of the longer treks.
The trail follows a gentle valley up to a monastery founded in the 13th century — one of the last great repositories of Tibetan Buddhist scholarship in Kham. You'll spend the night with a monk's family, eat what they eat, and have conversations that don't need translation.
This is the route we recommend for first-time visitors to the region, for families, and for travelers who want a longer conversation with a place rather than a longer walk through it.
Day by Day
Manigango → Zongskya Valley → Monastery
Easy walking up the Zongskya valley, ~18 km, 5-6 hours. The trail passes through small villages, prayer walls, and barley fields. Arrive at the monastery by mid-afternoon. Time to explore with the resident monks. Overnight in the monk's family quarters.
Monastery → Morning Prayers → Return
Optional 6am prayer session. Breakfast with the family. Walk back to Manigango by a different route, ~17 km, 4-5 hours. Arrive by mid-afternoon.
What makes this different
The monastery has been receiving respectful travelers for over a decade, and a small portion of every booking goes directly to the monastery's preservation fund. There is no entry fee, no guided tour, no obligation. Stay as long or as short as feels right. The monks ask only that you observe silence in the prayer hall and ask before photographing monks.
Walk a quieter path.
This route is available year-round (winter with adjusted pace). Best months: April, May, September, October.

What travelers say
800 years of incense and prayer. We sat with the head lama for tea. Achuo knew everyone — clearly he is trusted here.
Easy 2-day loop but feels much more. The monastery, the village, the valley. Quiet. Real. Best ‘easy’ trek I've done.
My kids (8 and 11) completed this without issues. The altitude is mild, the culture is deep, Achuo was wonderful with them.
